ben_and_shaq_comcast“12 Months!?!”

A new ad starring Ben Stein and Shaq promoting a special price for Comcast Digital Cable totally misses the mark by showing the two handcuffed together and then making a point to emphasize that they’re going to be shaq-led for 12 months.  The idea is supposed to be that Shaq represents “Being the best” and Ben represents being frugal.  But instead all I get is that I’d be locked into the deal for a year.  It doesn’t help that after the two are handcuffed they are shocked to discover the duration of their deal…

41r8lzm4ml_ss400_I don’t want to be a brag but I told you so. 2009 is going to be the year of super cheap very large flash drives. 9 to 5 mac just reported that Amazon is selling a 64GB thumb drive for a mere $78 – with free shipping. I guess it regularly goes for about $100 more and 9 to 5 is recommending that you buy it before the price goes back up. But I believe that this is just the beginning of what we’ll see in the next 12 months. Let me quote myself here…

October 22, 2008: I expect that at this rate we’re only a year away from having 32GB if not 64GB memory sticks and thumb drives.  It almost seems that flash memory is accelerating at a much higher rate than Moore’s Law would suggest. Actually, I predict that due to new memory technologies thumb drives and solid state hard drives will take a very large jump in capacity within the next year or two, leaping all the way into the 250GB to 1TB range.

drobo_left_angle_hiPersonal Disclaimer – I hate it when websites ‘review’ products without really testing them. What especially kills me is when they quote stats off a sell sheet as if they actually got those results in practice. Therefore this is not a review of the Drobo because I don’t own a Drobo. However, this IS an explanation of why I’m not buying a Drobo – at least not in it’s current form. Read on… Read… »

battlestarhddvdIf you are one of the dozens of people like me who early adopted HD DVD over Blu-ray, you might want to head over to Fry’s Electronics. Tonight I stopped at the one here in Las Vegas and picked up the HD DVD box sets of Battlestar Galactica Season 1 and Heros Season 1 for $14.99 each.

I have been keeping my eye on Battlestar, waiting for it to come down in price on the dead format. I heard that it was $20, but at $14.99 it’s a steal of a deal – even knowing that it will eventually be coasters. It’s a 6-disc set containing the 2 part mini-series and all the season 1 episodes – over 12 hours of HD content plus commentary tracks and other bonus features.

I also couldn’t pass up Heros.  It has over 16 hours of content for the same $15.

I believe that despite the current economic troubles this holiday season will mark a huge jump for BluRay traction – especially if this deal is any indication of what’s coming. If you’re in the market to upgrade to BluRay NOW is the time to jump on it. MacMall has the Sony S350 for $199.99, which is half the original retail price and $100 less than the current sale price at the Sony store. This player is fully BD 2.0 capable and has an ethernet port on the back for all those useless BD-Live features and firmware updates. This is THE player to get unless you’re going to opt for the PS3.  And 199.99 is the price we’ve all been waiting for.

Dell Black Friday AdBlackFriday.info has Black Friday deals posted early. Black Friday, in case you don’t know, is the day after Thanksgiving and is the biggest shopping day of the year.  I found this Dell ad there which shows the Dell Mini 9 for $299 – which is $50 off.  Interesting that an intel Core 2 Duo icon is right next to the ad when the Mini doesn’t have a Core 2 Duo it has an intel Atom. But I guess the logo is referring to the Inspiron 1525 in the ad above it. Read… »
