ns4600-heroTLP001 – In the premiere episode of the podcast I review the Promise SmartStor NS4600, and discuss setting it up, using it as a media server, and explain how to set up a dynamic dns so that you can access it remotely and stream videos to your iphone over the net.

UPDATE: As you can see by the big video player above, I’m now hosting the episode here at tomorrowland.com.  If you’ve got the bandwidth don’t forget to use the HD option and go full screen to see it in 720P.  Please let me know if you have any problems with the player as I’ve just tweaked the code and installed it.  I’m sure I’ll continue tweaking it.  You can also download the episode.  Just right-click one of these links and choose Saved Linked File… or similar:

About The Tomorrowland.com Podcast

For six months or so I’ve been contemplating turning tomorrowland.com into more of what you would either call a ’show’, a video blog, or a podcast.  I knew it would be a lot more work, but I believe video is more accessable than type.  So for the past three weeks I’ve been gearing up to produce it.  After a lot of experimentation (and a lot of late nights) the premiere episode has finally found it’s form.

If we were looking to set three or four of these up side by side/daisy chain for some massive archival storage of video is that possible? So theoretically 24 or 32 TB as a single displayed volume? Thanks. Nice job with the podcast too.

    • Well promise makes larger scaled storage solutions. Mine is maxed out at 8TB – except that you can plug in an external sata drive (which could be another large raid) for more. I guess you could get another 8TB out of that – but it would be a different mount

At that scale (24 or 32 TB) you're looking at a SAN (if you want it shared). If there is a specific application and you're serious contact me and I'll help you find a solution. But it could be expensive – like 30 grand or more. Think of it this way.. cost, reliability and size are all on a sliding scale. If you want super-reliable redundancy then you're going to pay for it.

Awesome. Very informative. I think I'll buy a Smartstor NS4600.

Were you using the SR-1 version?

    • I don't have that firmware yet. I saw it at CES and need to download it and try it out but I've been too busy. I'm also planning to do a popcorn hour popbox /slash/ promise nas combo video but I have a lot of other videos to make first. So little time…
