I love gizmodo and engadget. In my bookmarks bar I have a pulldown called “ENMODGIZGADGET” which contains all of the tech sites I visit on a daily basis. But one of the main things those sites do is link to news rumors on other sites and add small commentaries on them. This site is different because it’s about all the technology that is in my life – and hopefully yours. I’m always in to something and this is where I write about it. It’s also different than a some gadget blogs because for the most part these are technologies that I’m actually using or wanting to use. I also avoid linking to other tech blog sites unless it’s to add reference to whatever I’m talking about. The bottom line is that this is not just a copy of one of those other blog sites.
Other important things to know about our perspective is that it’s 90% mac-centric, high-end home video, higher-end pro video, final cut over avid, a bit opinionated for sure, and probably a little on the technical side. I’m a old time computer programmer, iPhone developer, DVD author, BluRay developer, home video enthusiast, gamer, photographer, video producer, Emmy-nominated editor, a post production expert, a husband and a father. I look at system tech from a very high consumer end, hard drives from a HD post production perspective, and video from a real HD quality perspective. But I also try to put things in terms that are easy to understand and hopefully entertaining.

michaelsmith.tv becomes tomorrowland.com
In February of 2009 I decided to move my blog from michaelsmith.tv to tomorrowland.com. I blogged about the move here. Tomorrowland.com is not affiliated with Disney or with Disneyland. I purchased the domain name in 1997 with the intention of starting a site that (in hindsight) can be described as myspace. My idea was to create a place, or a land where people could easily create a digital home. At the time I felt this was a futuristic idea, and so I tried to register futureland.com. When it was unavailable I instead went with tomorrowland.com. Now, about 12 years later, it makes sense to move my tech blog here.

Michael, are you still planning on reviewing the Thecus NAS consumer product? I saw a post you had 3 weeks ago on tuaw or some other site about reviewing one of the NAS solutions available from them.
Thanks for asking. I've been super busy, which is why not many posts lately. I now have a backlog of topics which should start coming in soon.
I am doing that review. I have it running – 7 x 1.5 TB drives in a RAID 6 – which leaves me with about 8 TB usable. It seems like a good box overall, but I'm not sure about some of the advertised features. I need to do more testing to really figure it out. The docs suck. So far I tried putting an HD media file on there and play it using my popcorn hour. Both are hard wired to my gigabit router but the video skipped. Now, the same media file served wirelessly off my mac streams fine MOST of the time. Thecus says that the box should do around 80 Mbps, while the media file would only require around 35 mbps. So I'm not sure why it wasn't able to stream it. Maybe my router is to blame, but why would the file play fine over wireless but not wired. That would lead me to believe that the Thecus is at fault.
Please check back and feel free to stay on me about it. I'm desperate for a solution and was hoping that the Thecus was it. I just need to do a lot more testing before feeling comfortable with it. I'd say my concerns at the moment are the speed and the fact that the media server doesn't recognize all the media formats that the popcorn hour does. So it has to be mounted NTFS which is should be fine, but isn't at the moment.

Do you know a good way to burn or convert a DMG file on a PC? I did what you did and installed OSX on a Dell Mini, but I dont have enough room on my SSD to mount and install a program thats in a DMG format. Just wondering if you know how to do this or what you recommend. Thanks
