Thanks. One quick note. The screen shots that towards the top of the article don't show the problem because I specifically grabbed the progressive frames.

Of the 3 pictures you're mentioning with the girls foot, the first one is a good frame. Any artifacts or microblocking you're seeing there is because of the MPEG encoding and/or the way I ripped the frames.

The second frame, if you click through to see the full size, shows what looks like a NORMAL interlaced frame. Interlaced frames are normally found in DVDs. What makes it wrong is what's found in the second (lower) field - which is seen in the 3rd picture... That picture shows that within that field there are two frames that are merged. The result when playing full speed is that the motion is all blended together and then jerks to a stop, then moves all blended again. So it appears to stutter along.

I double-checked this the other night on my Bluray and it's very hard to watch.

Michael -- GREAT article. I hope this gets the traction it deserves. // I am confused about the compression artifacts on the progressive shot you show. Looking at the girl's foot and then also the horizontal lines in some of the macroblocks... it does appear that this frame might not be completely progressive. What do you make of those two issues?
